ChatGPT just joined the EU's 'Very Large' club
The European Commission just designated ChatGPT a Very Large Online Search Engine under the Digital Services Act, alongside Reddit and Roblox as Very Large Online Platforms. Hitting 45 million monthly EU users triggers the label, meaning OpenAI now has to police minors' safety, mental health impacts, and illegal content, plus explain how its algorithms work. All three have until December 2026 to comply.
Nothing says "you've made it" in Brussels like a regulatory designation with the word 'Very' in the name.
Why it matters
This isn't a slap on the wrist, DSA violations can cost up to 6% of global revenue. It also confirms ChatGPT has gone from cool chatbot to full-blown mass platform, big enough to warrant the same scrutiny as Facebook and Instagram.
