Squid Game USA: Eliminated Before It Even Started
Netflix reportedly pulled the plug on its American-made Squid Game spinoff, a David Fincher project codenamed 'Heckler' that had Utopia creator David Kelly writing and was set to film in the UK. Cate Blanchett's mysterious cameo in the finale had fans convinced a Western expansion was coming. Instead, Netflix is apparently pivoting to a Love Is Blind style model: localized spinoffs for different countries, with no dedicated US version in the mix. Turns out globalizing dystopian capitalism critique into a Fincher joint was one twist too many.
Nothing says 'we missed the point' quite like franchising a show about crushing capitalism, until you cancel the franchise for being too capitalist to bother with.
