Cara was built as a safe haven for artists hiding from generative AI data vacuums. Then a Redditor spent under ten dollars to download its entire 12 million image library and gloat about it on an artificial intelligence subreddit. But the stunt backfired emotionally. The scraper actually felt bad, deleted the post, and is now collaborating with Cara founder Jingna Zhang on an open source tool to block future attacks.

The copycat problem
The redemption arc did not save the platform. While the original scraper switched sides, his Reddit post inspired two more massive data grabs. One attacker dumped millions of links on Hugging Face, forcing Zhang to launch a massive legal defense fund just to keep the servers alive.
