ChatGPT had a side gig helping run a scam ring
OpenAI says it caught and banned accounts linked to an organized criminal scam operation that was using ChatGPT to write and translate persuasive scripts designed to lure victims into fake crypto investment schemes, the same playbook behind so called pig butchering scams. The company frames it as proof its safety systems can catch bad actors trying to weaponize AI at scale, but it also confirms what everyone feared: scammers are already outsourcing the sweet talk to chatbots. It matters because it shows AI companies are now playing whack a mole with criminals using their own products against regular people.
Nothing says progress like AI helping catch AI enabled fraud it also helped create.
