The 'real' unemployment rate is six times what you think
Forget the official 4.1% unemployment rate everyone quotes. The Ludwig Institute for Shared Economic Prosperity says the 'True Rate of Unemployment,' which counts anyone without a full-time job paying at least $26,000 a year, just hit 24.9% in July, the fourth straight monthly rise. That means roughly one in four working-age Americans is jobless, underemployed, or stuck in a job that doesn't pay a living wage, a gap the headline number conveniently hides.
Turns out the economy isn't 'fine,' it's just really good at hiding the receipts.
The numbers
The pain isn't spread evenly: functional unemployment hits 31% of women, 27.3% of Black workers, and over 50% of people without a high school diploma. Meanwhile a bachelor's degree cuts your odds to 16.8%, proof the 'jobs report is great' narrative depends heavily on who's asking.
