GoPro trades action cams for the industrial-military complex
GoPro just got bought out by Starman Holding, the shadowy phone-case conglomerate behind Incipio and Griffin, for $285 million in cash. Days after YouTuber Markiplier quietly became its top shareholder, GoPro's CEO now says the company is "addressing important areas of national security related to cameras, optics and AI infrastructure." Translation: your action-cam company is pivoting into defense, government, robotics and aerospace, chasing the same drone-warfare optics boom that's swallowed up half the hardware industry lately.
Why it matters
GoPro's stock had cratered and it was drowning in $92 million of debt, so this looks less like strategy and more like survival. It's also part of a bigger trend: consumer drone and camera makers quietly retooling for military contracts as the Pentagon's AI and drone budgets balloon.
