Tinder wants your face, not just your bio
Tinder is rolling out mandatory Face Check verification to existing users in the US and UK, not just new signups, as AI deepfakes and chatfishing scams explode across dating apps. Match Group's Yoel Roth calls it "a statement about what human connection online should require," but critics like security researcher Katie Moussouris call it "security theater." More than a dozen dating apps now use face recognition or biometric ID checks, meaning proving you're human increasingly means handing over your face.
Why it matters
Romance scams topped $4 billion in the US over the past decade, so the fraud problem is real. But normalizing biometric handovers just to date online quietly trains millions of people to trade privacy for trust, even as breaches and "security theater" critiques pile up.
