Warner Bros. Discovery Says Amazon Went on a Talent Heist
What happened
Warner Bros. Discovery is suing Amazon, accusing it of illegally poaching Pia Barlow, its former senior VP for originals marketing, while she was still under contract until October 2027. The suit says Amazon dangled a bigger paycheck plus legal cover if WBD tried to enforce the contract, calling it a 'lawless employee shopping spree.' Barlow is slated to start as Amazon's head of original series marketing on August 3rd.
Why this matters
Hollywood runs on multi-year employment contracts that lock in key execs — a norm tech companies barging into streaming keep colliding with. This isn't the first fight of its kind: YouTube settled with Disney over a similar hire, and Fox beat Netflix in court over the same issue.
The slightly cynical read
Amazon has the cash to just eat lawsuits as a cost of building out its studio, and offering legal indemnification to poached execs is basically pricing in the litigation risk. WBD, meanwhile, gets to look tough defending its talent bench while quietly hemorrhaging execs anyway — Francesca Orsi is reportedly next on Amazon's wishlist.
What to watch next
Watch whether Amazon settles quietly like YouTube did, or fights it out like Netflix did against Fox. Also worth tracking: does Francesca Orsi actually jump ship, and does this trigger a broader industry crackdown on term-contract enforcement as tech keeps recruiting Hollywood's bench?
