Hackers cloned voices to try to rob hedge funds blind
Bloomberg reports that AI-generated 'vishing' attacks, voice phishing calls that clone real people's voices, recently targeted elite hedge funds including Citadel, Two Sigma, and Point72, plus several private equity firms. Two Sigma says it caught the attempt before any systems were breached; Citadel declined to comment. It's the latest sign that cheap, convincing voice-cloning AI is turbocharging old-school scams, following a 2024 case where deepfaked executives tricked an employee into wiring $25.5 million. Wall Street's smartest money is apparently still one convincing fake voicemail away from disaster.
Turns out the smartest guys in the room can still be fooled by a chatbot doing an impression.
