A $3.48m report used to justify Australia's under-16 social media ban is under fire after a Senate submission found its 'emerging technologies' chapter cites academic papers that appear to be AI hallucinations, meaning they simply don't exist. The report's authors, UK firm ACCS, initially denied using AI at all, then admitted ChatGPT helped 'rewrite paragraphs more succinctly' while insisting the fake citations weren't its fault. Minister Anika Wells had cited the report as proof age-verification tech works, so if its footnotes are fiction, so is part of the ban's foundation.
